Chow: Spicy Pickle

Paninis, Neapolitan-style pizzas score big at lunchtime

May 16, 2008

The Space
With a couple locations in the area, one in Reno, one in Sparks, Spicy Pickle is simple in its décor; steel tables set fairly close together, self-serve drink fountain and a counter where you order your food. Find a seat, wait for the runner to call your name, shoot your hand in the air and your food comes to you. Tables are packed at lunch, but they move quickly so I've never waited more than a few minutes even after walking into a full restaurant.

The Food
Paninis, salads, soup, subs and, my favorite, pizzetti .. a Neapolitan-style pizza for one. There are 40 Spicy Pickle's in 13 states, so the fare isn't local, but it's still pretty awesome by my lunchtime standards. (I've yet to go there for dinner, but since it's the same menu, it stands to reason I'd be happy then, too.)

The Drinks
The normal fare; iced tea, soft drinks and some bottled juices and waters in the case by the register.

Gotta Try
The Sonoma Pizzetti. Shaved, roasted chicken, sundried tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, rosemary and tomato sauce. I'm in heaven just writing about it. It's about 11" big, but on a super skinny, crispy crust so I can eat the whole thing by myself. Not that I should but I can, and I generally do. It's also a good size for sharing with a group, like an appetizer.

Price
The Pizzetti is $7.55; salads from $6.25 for a big one, to $3.50 for a smaller portion. All paninis are $6.95. Kid's meals are available for $3.75.
